Web Based Editors
- PicMonkeyA simple photo editor that works right in your browser (so you don't have to download anything). You'll need to sign up for a free account to export (save) your edited photos. It's excellent for beginners who just want to make photos a little prettier or have a little fun. You just drag and drop your photo, edit it, and then save it back onto your computer.
- PixlrA more advanced photo editor, similar to Photoshop. It's free and works right in your browser. It also has iOS and Android apps available.
Full Downloadable Software
- GIMPAn advanced, open-source photo editor that does most of the same things as an expensive photo editor (i.e. Photoshop). Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
- Paint.NETA free photo editor with a simple interface. Less of a learning curve than GIMP, but does not have all the features of GIMP. Available for Windows.
- InkscapeAnother powerful free photo editor similar to Photoshop, especially good for vector graphics. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Where to get photos
Want to take your own photos? The library has DSLR cameras and a 360 degree camera available for you to borrow for free.
If you want to use photos others have created, there are free and legal ways to do it. Explore the Creative Commons resources on the Finding Media to Use page.
Releases
If you are planning to put your project up on Facebook or YouTube, it's a good idea to get your subjects/actors to sign a release. This is a good, basic one to start with.
